Clearwater, Florida, is perhaps not known as a racing town. The 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack ate up the miles from Gainesville to there quickly; I could not have been happier with the satellite radio and multiple plug-ins built into the car. Todd Werner has taken some of his money from a successful inventing career and created a substantial collection of vintage race cars. When I told him about my cross-country jaunt, he was happy to make time for me to come and see the Dick Landy cars he presently owns.

My time with the Landy family was over too soon, but not before I had a chance to head up over the mountains to a well-known historic drag race in Bakersfield, California. Started back in 1959, this race has more recently become one of the largest gatherings of historic drag cars at one time. Once again with Robert Landy riding shotgun, I put the HEMI® V8 in our 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack through its paces as we rolled down into the valley to witness nitromethane-fueled action.

As I worked my way west with the 2015 Challenger R/T Scat Pack, the mother road beckoned stops. In Texas, I found a vintage-car graveyard, complete with Mopars from the era of tail fins and chrome excess; somewhat hauntingly, it reminded me I was following paths blazed long ago. Old Route 66 and US40 intersect and become one in some locations, and with a chill in the air, I stopped off at a legendary steakhouse near Amarillo.
