Round one of the Global RallyCross Championship kicked off this past weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Travis Pastrana finally got the chance to see how his Dodge Dart matched up against the competition. After trading paint with Toomas Heikkinen, Pastrana unfortunately came up short in the main event.
Pastranas evening got off to a promising start as he won heat 2C with a crowd-pleasing pass against David Binks. But early in the main event, he was forced wide and into the wall by the 20 year-old Heikkinen. With its right front suspension badly crumpled, Pastranas Dart was unable to continue. Heikkinen would later be black-flagged for similar rough driving against Dave Mirra.
The Dodge Dart is an amazing vehicle, said Pastrana. I thought we were going to win tonight even after all the trouble we went through. I had been aggressive all day. Well get a little better on the takeoffs and hopefully come out with some hole shots. We were as fast if not better than everyone on the rest of the course with the car. So, it turned out to be a very disappointing day.
The next Global RallyCross Championship race takes place at Texas Motor Speedway on June 8-9 and is a companion event with the Izod IndyCar Firestone 550.
