Allen Johnson qualified his Dodge Avenger in the number one position and then mowed through a tough 16-car field to win the Pro Stock crown at the Dollar General NHRA Summernationals in Topeka, Kansas.
Johnsons 6.618 e.t. at 207.85 mph on Friday edged Summit Racing teammates Jason Line and Greg Anderson for the top qualifying spot. Johnson then drove his Mopar-sponsored Dodge Avenger around Ronnie Humphrey, Ron Krisher, and Shane Gray in successive rounds to meet Anderson in the final, where he put away the four-time NHRA Pro Stock champion on the tricky Heartland Park track with a 6.58 to Andersons 6.69.
Today our mission was to be consistent and maintain lane choice, and we did that until the final round, said Johnson. It just so happened that the right lane came around better than the left, so it worked right into the palm of our hands and Greg shook the tires a little bit.
Johnson now has two national event victories in 2012 while his fellow Avenger driver Vincent John Nobile picked up another in Houston, giving Dodge a total of three Pro Stock wins in the first eight races of the season. Anderson continues to lead the Pro Stock season points but Johnson, in third, has now closed the gap to 132.
