The Duke Boys Get Shut Down!

 
Bo and Luke may have no problem outrunning Sheriff Roscoe Coltrane’s Monaco police cruiser but they finally met their match. Our friends at Edmunds.com pitted the big-block powered General Lee against the new 2011 Charger R/T. Even though the General Lee packs 440 cubic inches which allows it to fly higher and jump further, it was no match for its younger offspring on the asphalt. Our new Charger R/T was quicker in 0-60 and quarter-mile times and its highly tuned suspension and brakes give it an advantage over its B-Body ancestor when “running from the law”. Now, imagine the trouble the Duke boys could have caused in Hazzard County if they had a new 370 horsepower HEMI® Charger R/T.

    Ahhh.NO !

    CarLife tested a 440 Cuda (2 hundred pounds lighter than a Charger) in 1969…
    With 8 inch slicks it ran low 12′s..and street tires 14′s…
    So a 69 Charger R/T is a mid-high 12 second car !!
    Remember street tires they ran 13-14 on average,put wider tires or slicks they run 12′s !!

      i rather have the 69 charger r/t over the new one personaly. the 69 looks better. the new one looks like a squshed toad and hit by a mack truck. and it don’t look right with 4 doors.

    Nope. You tested it on track conditions. In the backwoods conditions that exemplified Hazzard County, the 69 Charger is definitely the better car.

    The new Charger RT is too low slung, could not do the terrain at higher speeds, and would end up tearing out its own undercarriage. This is simply common sense. Not to mention the rims and tires would have self destructed under that type pf abuse.

    Had you tested under the actual conditions the SHOW presented, the new car would definitely have lost.

    I’ll take the 69 Charger any day. YEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!

    I think this shows two things. One, is how great the new Charger is. Two, is how good the old Charger was that, while it “lost” this comparison, it performed extremely well against a car that has a 42 year advantage on it..

    Furthermore,in 69 they had a orange block for a 440 magnum…that Charger had a blue block…
    For handling the Dukes Charger was raised up in the back,therefore handling suffered,the front also looks higher than stock !!
    I run 235 front 275 rear’s and lower the front torsion bars a inch or two,and the handling increases ten-fold !!
    And braking,new cars are easier to stop with abs,but the old cars you actually have to know how to drive to stop them…same with handling you gotta know how to drive them to make them stick to the bumper of a new SRT Challenger…trust me I have done alot of crazy stuff,past and present..
    Road tests from back in the day ,some have 60-0 in 125 or so feet ,with p.front disks..I have an article of a 68 Fury stopping in 132 feet from 60..A Charger 127 feet..
    But like the one they tested,they lock up sometimes ,and pull,to the right,and they had to ease off on the brake …If you know these cars such as I and did a lot of driving & racing…You know how to control the car when slamming on the brakes,(it probably needs new calipers)..
    .Also when you are jamming down on the brakes I put it into second then first that really slows the beasts down !!I had a stock 1967 4 wheel drum brake 383 hipo 4bbl B-body and was racing a stock 99 Mustang GT (my buddy)and a car cut in front of us at 55 hmm or so mph on a highway,we both slammed on the brakes and both stopped side by side,my buddy didnt gear down just slammed on the brakes,I didnt go sideways or sqeal..that was p.DRUM brakes not disk at the front..I am not going to say the old Charger’s/cars stop better,but it should of been better than that Dukes beater !! Guess the car tester is used to new cars..
    New cars stop better especially when wet or icey that is when I find it makes the most difference..

    Also,the Dukes Charger Comments by tester,
    “Despite three tall gears, the General’s huge power made launches a matter of trying to manage wheelspin. Best run was achieved with a minor amount of power braking, then generally squeezing on the throttle until there was traction — then full “unleashment” of the horses. The big V8 sounds awesome — makes you long for yesteryear — or a rerun of the Dukes”.

    So,they couldnt floor it off the line,look at the video,it went sideways and not even full throttle..he is off and on the throttle..
    And most recorded times back in the day (times were all over the map)most floored it and spun,then missed 1st gear,yes automatics do that,tires are spinning and you pass 30 mph when it grabs your in 2nd..you miss your powerband and 1st gear,if you can make it hook/it shifts at 50 mph,then chirps your pretty much at 60 when it comes into 2nd..

    How does a street tire new 383 RoadRunner,same weight as a Charger go 0-60 in 5.1 by carlife..and a 440 do 7.8 ?They also had a 3.23axle ratio HemiCharger do 4.8 and another Hemi with 4.10′s do 7.2 ? I will tell you lack of traction !!!

    Having owned several stock 440′s in C-bodies ,b-bodies and e -bodies..you cannot floor it from the take off,half throttle or else you spin all over..
    By the way I raced many new Hemi cars and SRT- 6.1 cars and my stock 68 Charger R/T beats them…My 68 440 tnt 300(rebuilt engine not bored out stock cam) runs beside a SRT-8, 6.1 Mopars !! I even owned a 06 srt Charger as well..

    The 392 will be the one to beat !! But I have that covered,I have a 69 Charger 440,that is a low 11 sec car..12′s with street tires,hemigrind cam,heads done..just needs paint and interior..I sold a 68 a few months ago to fund this one..No not my 68 R/T I owned since I was 14 !

I’ll tell you whats wrong, the picked the Mustang with the biggest engine it came with. they also picked the camaro with the largest engine, but yet, with the challenger, the get the second to largest engine. are they like scared to use the str8? must be too hard for them to handle

    440 has a lot of good points, but left out the dukes had the engine they ripped out of a race car! that – restrictor plates and by the sound i am guessing it was straight piped, ron sad to say they did have a four door model but it was rather uncommon but i do agree real ones would have two doors! and the conditions, well yeah given modern structuring the car would lose most or all it’s parts with out beefing the suspension. new car would lose but only because dodge went the wrong way with the project. cool car still but if they really had the charger in mind they would have made it two door like the challenger and kept the sunk in rear window and side and hood louvers that made the whole car. i am sorry but please redo the test with same story line. junk your stock engines and use real nascar engines like the dukes did. and also i didn’t see the cars take a hop and cars do hop with out too much damage i know so! 55 mph at a 30-45 degree hill you got a good flight on your hands that wont kill the car. and i agree learn how to press the pedal down with out peeling and see what time you get! firm and slow is way better than hard,fast and broken

    Uhhh, I think your thinking of something else. Until 2006, there was never a car that had four doors that had the charger badge on it.

    dodge- one thing get rid of that F***ing back door set or at least make a 2 door model you’re killing the look and class of the Charger it just ain’t right!!!!!! oh and another thing nothing can compete against the General Lee just nothin’ that is the classic BAD ASS of its time and even this time because even when they redid the movie, did they use a new 4 door charger that answer is NOOOOOOOO!!! so just let it go the new chargers look like shit just pure shit they have no right of the charger name take them off the assembly line and take a few years on the drawing board and bring them back with a new look that at least resembles the charger of back then or even better yet use the 1966 or 67 model look and bring it back as a concept so it can have with respect from the people to hold the name charger tag.

    If I were RLD, I wouldn’t post these comparisons. Even a blind man can feel the difference on how much sleeker and better looking the 1969 Charger was. This new stubby cab forward design makes the car look fat and heavy. The new Charger is the best looking four door car on the market, but it just does not compare to the 1969 version. For as jacked up as that old Charger was with the retarded timing, I think it fared pretty well against the new one. I really thought there would be more of a difference. Slap a $150 509 lift purple shaft cam in it and it will leave the new one in the dust. Maybe the next Charger will look more like the ’69.

    Ok. Were to start? Well first, its about time I see something on here about the best tv show ever! I know its a little out dated but still bad ass, just sayin. When it comes to a 69 charger NOTHING will ever compare! Best mopar ever built! Who cares how it compared because I know if it was some one behind the wheel who knows how to pedal a real car it would have won. Ill bet the dude testing the cars almost messed his pants when he turned the key and heard that RB big block come to life! Might even been to scared to mash down on the pedal. Sorry but I’ve drove my share of muscle cars and really not much muscle in these new ones. Getting better I must admit. The new charger and challenger need to go on a diet big time! Get those perfomance numbers up. I still wish I had the funds to to buy a new charger, weld the rear doors shut, shave the rear handles, graft on a challenger front clip and make the exhaust loud as hell! And who knows maybe even paint it orange. That would be a good looking car. I don’t care what dodge thinks they should have done a retro TWO door charger! Really how hard would it be to offer 2 and 4 door option on the charger?

    Put M/T street slicks on the 69 it will run mid 12′s,all day long..As Factory original Stock 440′s do..
    The 2011 will run mid 13′s all day long,seen new Challenger’s same engine with slicks do so….
    CarLife tested a new 440 and it ran low 12′s with 8 inch slicks..14′s with street tires,no traction..low 12′s with slicks when the car was new and not messed with !!
    People loved old 440 Mopars for a reason,they were fast as hell,threw you in the seat..You could slap a $100 bill on the dash and floor it and the passenger could not move up to grab the money !! That is what a 12 sec stock 440 does,with a good driver !!

    ACTUALLY, Had either car been tested under the actual show conditions, they would both have been destroyed.

    You don’t think they actual drove away after jumping a bridge now did you? They went through 329 Chargers throughout the show’s run because they kept destroying them with those crazy stunts.

    Now if I had a choice of an ’11 or a ’69 to jump over a bridge. I’d take the ’11 and it’s airbags. :-)

    while doing my daily google search for:

    “dodge charger” -sedan.

    Is this a real sweepstakes? Both the site I found it on and the the supposed dodgemotorsports site, throw the words charger and challenger around as if they don’t know the difference, IE it’s a charger sweepstakes but it asks you to “customize your ultimate dodge challenger” etc.

    Some of you people are stupid beyond words. This test was done FOR FUN. That jackass that wrote a freaking dissertation on the comparison, get a life. Secondly, Dodge does make a 2 door Charger, its call the CHALLENGER. Its FORTY TWO YEARS LATER. Times change. Get your head out of your ass and the past. I love the old Charger, it will never be replaced. I also love the new one for what it is TODAY.
