My time with the Landy family was over too soon, but not before I had a chance to head up over the mountains to a well-known historic drag race in Bakersfield, California. Started back in 1959, this race has more recently become one of the largest gatherings of historic drag cars at one time. Once again with Robert Landy riding shotgun, I put the HEMI® V8 in our 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack through its paces as we rolled down into the valley to witness nitromethane-fueled action.

If you haven’t treated yourself to a visit to the local drag strip, do it soon. Unlike most forms of automotive competition, anybody with a valid driver’s license and a car meeting basic safety requirements can hit the strip and have an afternoon full of fun exploring the joy of sheer, unencumbered, straight line acceleration. At the drag strip, there are no sharp corners to brake for, no pit stops for gas and tires, and nobody in your way as you charge toward the finish line.

Remembering Jim Thornton, Dodge Performance Legend

On Monday, June 2, 2014, the drag racing world and fans of Dodge drag racing history lost Jim Thornton to an autoimmune disease and a rare form of cancer. He was 77. Thornton was the man behind the Super Stock and Factory Experimental Max Wedge and Race HEMI® vehicle platforms that carried racers to victory in the early and mid-sixties.
