According to the folks at Cars.com, here’s how the popular web-based  auto shopper’s guide determines the awards:

“Millions upon millions of shoppers visit Cars.com every year, searching for cars, making contacts with and sending leads to dealers, and reviewing their own cars as well. From all of that activity (and a little online voting), we determine which car best represents the voice of our shoppers.”
