Dodge racer Allen Johnson scored a career first at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals this past weekend, winning two consecutive Pro Stock titles in as many weeks. For all his success in drag racing, Johnson had never won two major events in a row. Until now.
Equally impressive, the red-hot Johnson now has four victories this season, another career bestand now extends his series points lead to 54 over rival Greg Anderson.
Johnson opened his weekend in the California wine country by earning the number one qualifying position in his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger. Then on race day, he mowed down Matt Hartford, Jeg Coughlin Jr., and Jason Line in successive rounds, using a string of quick and consistent low-6.50 second elapsed times. In the final round, Johnson then drove around Anderson with a 6.573 at 210.93 mph, despite his opponents quicker reaction time.
I cant imagine winning two in a row, and weve done it with earning maximum points, said Johnson. Every round of qualifying and eliminations we had the quickest car. Its mind-boggling to me. We are getting in the championship mind-set. Ive never thought of myself as the best out here.
Were learning how to win, round by round by round, Johnson said. And were taking it one round at a time.
